The following major facilities were added to PGI: (with independent budget granted by the Parliament)
Advanced Cardiac Centre set up with 200 beds and 50 beds ICU, three Cath Labs and four Operation Theaters.
Heart and liver transplants started.
Advanced Trauma Centre began functioning with 3-D volume radiography and dual energy radiography.
Bone Marrow Transplant Centre established.
Advanced Eye Centre with 100 beds established and Lasik surgery introduced.
Advanced Urology Centre established.
Upgradation of Anesthesia and Dietetics department. (Funds provided under MPLADS).
A new Artificial Kidney Centre set up with 30 hemodialysis machines including for hepatitis B/C infected patients. Largest in any Government Hospital.
New Intensive Care Units for Plastic Surgery (Burn Unit), Liver Diseases and Pulmonary Medicine.
The Department of Pulmonary Medicine started providing state-of-the-art interventional pulmonology services, including an endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) service. This is the only facility in the Government sector in the country.
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Centre, Gamma Knife and 3-T Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) established.
Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) Complex sanctioned to house a High Energy Linear Accelerator and a CT Simulator and other accessories for treatment of cancer.
The Department of Cytopathology and Gynaecological Pathology acquired the state-of-the-art facility of Liquid Based Cytology (LBC) which increases the sensitivity of diagnosis.
Two new state-of-the-art Gamma Cameras in the main department of Nuclear Medicine introduced.
Renal Transplant Centre upgraded.
An Automated Hematology Analyzer installed in the Hematology laboratory of the Department of Pediatrics.
Facility for Phase-I trial for drug testing established.
Stem Cell Research started.
School of Public Health started.
Nucleic acid testing (NAT) Lab – the most sensitive and state-of-the-art testing for improving blood safety from transfusion transmissible viral infections–HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C started in the Department of Transfusion Medicine.
Department of Pediatric Medicine established 2 ICMR centres for “evidence-based Child Health” and Primary Immune Deficiency Research.
Robotics for prostate surgery.
Started construction of 250 bedded new special Block (with 100 private rooms).
Multi-level parking constructed.
Retirement age in PGI increased to 65 from 62.
'Asha Jyoti' Women's Healthcare Outreach Mobile Programme launched with a mobile van equipped with a micro dose digital mammography unit for breast evaluation, a DEXA scan for evaluation of bone density and a digital video colposcope for detection of breast cancer, cervical cancer and osteoporosis.
I must acknowledge the determined following up of most of the above projects at different levels by Prof. K. K. Talwar, the then Director, PGI and his successors.
GOVT. MULTI SPECIALTY HOSPITAL (GMSH), SECTOR-16
New 5 Storey OPD Block added.
Trauma Unit having 28 beds with Emergency Operation set up.
Emergency ward expanded from16 to 82 beds.
24×7 Independent OTs for Surgery, Orthopedics, Trauma, Eye, ENT and Gynae.
Separate Ultra Sound facilities set up for General OPD, Intervention Ultra sound facility, Gynae Ultra Sound and Labour Room Ultra Sound for quick diagnosis and treatment.
Separate Mammography facility setup.
A drug de-addiction Centre started.
20 Registration and payment counters started to reduce the queues.
Parking area expanded.
Various other facilities launched or revamped.
GOVT. MEDICAL COLLEGE AND HOSPITAL (GMCH), SECTOR-32
From laying the first brick to building Block by Block, major work on the 500 bedded GMCH was carried out during my different tenures.
To begin with 50 MBBS seats were approved. The number was raised to 100 seats. For post-graduation course (MD/MS) first batch started in 2001 with 10 seats. Later raised to 40 seats.
Day care ward opened for chemotherapy.
UP GRADATION OF PRIMARY HEALTH CENTER TO CIVIL HOSPITAL, MANIMAJRA
50 bedded New Air Conditioned Emergency-cum-Mother and Child Block started. Upgraded to 100 bedded Civil Hospital.
Physiotherapy OPD started.-
24×7 ECG, Radiology and Laboratory services started.
CIVIL HOSPITAL, SECTOR 45
Dispensary upgraded to a 50 bedded Hospital.
Other Facilities
Upgradation of Dispensary to Primary Health Centre in Industrial Area Phase-I.
Poly Clinic, Sector-22 upgraded with indoor facilities for chest and TB patients and 30 bedded Gynaecology and Obstetrics wing.
Seven new ambulances sanctioned under MPLADS.
First city of India to provide for genetic testing of new born at Govt. Hospitals and pre natal scanning of expecting mothers to check disorders before birth.
Started providing benefit of free treatment including medicines under Rastriya Swastha Bima Yojna of the UPA Government.
Construction of 4 new Civil Dispensaries started in Southern Sectors – 48,49,50,52.
